The first 50 images from NYFW are here, with more to come tomorrow.
While we are all getting excited for Spring, Fall 2014 couldn't have come at a better time, with snow pummeling NYC and rain and wind in London the cozy clothes helped keep my mind off the cold. Knits were a huge theme, again, so don't throw any of those chunkier sweaters away any time soon. Some other themes to keep in mind when thinking about building your fall/winter wardrobe include, prints, plaid, oversized coats (now in prints!), chunky throws and/or fur collars/wraps. Pinstripes were also big on a number of runways, although there are none I am featuring today, and pant lengths were played with. The ankle pant seems to have waned while longer skinnier lengths were seen (E.g. J. Crew) or a much shorter cropped pant, which I personally have not featured as they seem impractical to me in the work place.
Some of the trends are mere continuations, but with an update. For example, we have seen mixed prints on the runway for a while but we are now seeing them mixed into 1 piece (DKNY, Custo Barcelona, Calla and Diane von Furstenberg for example). Knits, which we have fully embraced for the last 2 seasons, continue the trend of a voluminous look on top, although there was some belting which kept the look from getting too messy which makes me very happy. Jackets have not gotten any smaller, although the bomber in updated fabrics was nice to see (see Elie Tahari). And finally, plaid, keep buying plaid, it is here to stay. The difference for Fall 2014 is that it is toned down (a la Vera Wang), which means it is that much more accessible for your work wardrobe.
